“I AM NOT WHAT I THOUGHT I WAS . . . THERE MUST BE SOME MISTAKE!”

Chameleon Direct Response and Copy

I’m sure that most of you have seen those Ancestory.com commercials where a person tells their story of “who” they thought they were and then after submitting their DNA for testing through Ancestory.com find out that they are actually a completely different nationality than what they thought they were their whole life . . . right?

Well, I received a test kit from my children as a present and here’s what I found out . . . but first . . .

I know factually that both my father’s parents were French Canadian and that their families all came over from France. I spent years tracing my father’s family tree through; birth records, death certificates, marriage applications, military service, etc and eventually got as far back as the late 16, early 1700’s in St Germain France. It was a great deal of painstaking work and I was extremely disappointed when I could go back no further.

I did find out my last name was actually longer than what it is now, but was shortened somewhere along the line. My present last name is Sirois, but originally it was Sirois dit-Duplisea  not to French huh? So now on to my mother’s side of the family. I know factually that her father (my grandfather) was 100% Irish and that they came over on the boat from Ireland. My great-grandmother’s maiden name was Flaherty.

My mother’s mother (my grandmother) on the other hand was 50% French Canadian and 50% Native American. Damn am I a mutt! Sounds it right? So anyway, I used the swabs and swabbed my DNA and sent it back for testing, absolutely, positive, that it would come back French or Eastern European or even Native American. Do you want to know my results?

After a few months of anxiously waiting for my results, they finally arrived. Shock is the only word I can use to describe what I read! Survey says . . .

85% of my DNA came from . . . “New Zealand!”  Say what? There must be some mistake! The rest of my DNA was 8% Eastern European, 4% Chinese and 3% African I do believe I’m having an identity crisis! Who knew? I don’t even know who I am any more! New Zealand? My ancestors must have had a very, long swim, huh?

Has this happened to anyone else out there? What did you think you were? What did your DNA test say?
